Design Concept

The Silverleaf Contemporary stands as a study in tension and balance. Set within the exclusive Silverleaf community, the home occupies a transitional site where the Sonoran Desert floor begins its ascent toward the McDowell Mountains. The design responds to this dramatic topography with a series of cantilevered volumes that project outward from the hillside, framing views through precisely calculated apertures while sheltering interior spaces from the relentless western sun.

The architectural language is unapologetically modern yet deeply respectful of its context. Horizontal roof planes extend well beyond the building envelope, creating deep overhangs that shade the floor-to-ceiling glass walls below. These expansive glazing systems open the primary living spaces to panoramic mountain views, while carefully positioned solid walls provide privacy from neighboring properties and block harsh afternoon light. The result is a home that feels simultaneously open and protected, transparent and grounded.

Materials and Construction

The structural system relies on a custom-fabricated steel frame, with key members extending up to sixteen feet beyond their supports to create the signature cantilevered forms. Each steel connection was engineered by a structural team experienced in seismic design, ensuring that the bold geometry performs as confidently as it appears. Natural stone cladding, quarried from a formation in northern Arizona, wraps the grounded portions of the home, anchoring the floating steel volumes to the earth below.

Interior finishes maintain the same material rigor. White oak floors run continuously from the entry sequence through the great room, establishing a warm counterpoint to the concrete and steel structure. The home theater occupies a acoustically isolated wing, its walls lined with fabric panels concealing a precision sound system calibrated to the room’s specific dimensions. A sixty-foot lap pool traces the southern edge of the property, its dark plaster finish reflecting the sky and surrounding landscape like a sheet of obsidian.

Living Experience

Every space in the Silverleaf Contemporary was designed with a specific quality of light and view in mind. The primary suite occupies the upper cantilever, suspended above the desert floor with glass on three sides. Waking in this room means watching the first light strike the McDowell peaks while the valley below remains in cool shadow. The kitchen anchors the social core of the home, its massive island carved from a single block of leathered granite, positioned so the cook faces the mountains rather than a wall. This attention to the experience of daily life, not just the spectacle of architecture, distinguishes the project and reflects the Ashworth commitment to homes that are lived in, not merely admired.
