Design Concept
The Camelback Modern presented a challenge distinct from our typical desert estate commissions: how to deliver the spatial generosity and material quality of a custom Ashworth home on an infill lot within the established Camelback Corridor. The answer lay in vertical organization and disciplined planning. Rather than spreading across acreage, this residence stacks its program across two levels plus a rooftop deck, using the height to capture views of Camelback Mountain that would be impossible from ground level alone.
A walled courtyard entry sequences the arrival experience, transitioning visitors from the street through a planted forecourt before revealing the home’s transparent interior. This courtyard strategy serves multiple purposes: it provides privacy from the adjacent properties, creates a protected microclimate for shade-loving plantings, and establishes the home’s inward-looking ground floor as a counterpoint to the outward-looking upper level and rooftop. The interplay between compression and release, between solid wall and open glass, gives this compact home a sense of spatial richness that belies its modest footprint.
Materials and Systems
The material palette is deliberately restrained. Smooth white stucco planes intersect with charcoal-stained concrete block, creating a graphic composition that reads cleanly against the desert sky. A floating staircase of blackened steel and white oak connects the levels, its open risers allowing light to filter from a skylight above down through the center of the home. The chef’s kitchen anchors the main living level with a twelve-foot island topped in honed Calacatta marble, professional-grade appliances integrated behind custom panel fronts, and a walk-in pantry that doubles as a prep kitchen for entertaining.
Solar integration was designed into the architecture from the outset rather than added as an afterthought. Photovoltaic panels occupy the south-facing roof slope behind a raised parapet that conceals them from street view. A battery storage system allows the home to operate independently from the grid during peak demand periods, reducing both utility costs and environmental impact.
Urban Desert Living
The rooftop deck is the home’s defining experience. Accessed by an exterior stair that ascends along the north wall, the deck opens to an unobstructed panorama of Camelback Mountain to the north and the Phoenix skyline to the south. A built-in gas fireplace, outdoor kitchen, and shaded lounge area make this space functional year-round, transforming what would otherwise be unused roof area into the most compelling room in the house. The Camelback Modern demonstrates that luxury custom building is not limited to sprawling estate lots, and that thoughtful design can unlock extraordinary living within the constraints of an urban site.
